“The founders of BUDOKAN studied a number of Martial Arts including Chinese Kung-fu, Taekwondo, and several styles of Karate-do including Shito-ryu, Shotokan and Keishinkan. Keishinkan is a minor style of the Shuri-Te strain and is not widely known even in its country of birth. It comes from the line of Toyama Sensei and the excellent qualities of their instructors are well known in Australia, Malaysia and elsewhere."

In 1930, Toyama Kanken (in traditional Japanese the last name is spoken first) returned from Taiwan and opened his first dojo – the SHU DO KAN. He later opened a second dojo – the KEI SHIN KAN.

Takazawa Masanao trained with his father until the age of 17, when he was taken to Toyama Kanken, Dai Shihan. The young man was accepted by Toyama for training. He trained directly with Toyama until Toyama’s death in 1966.

Master Takazawa traveled throughout Asia, Australia, and the United States demonstrating what he had learned from Toyama Kanken and other notable grandmasters of the period through kata, kumite, defensive tactics, and “ki” development. Grandmaster Takazawa was a large and powerful man who presented a demeanor of strength and peace. He lived the life of his family’s tradition…that of the Samurai, in all he did and said.

Takazawa O'Sensei is the only student of Toyama Dai Shihan that he promoted to Hachidan and gave one of his dojo’s: a dojo of Karate-Do and not a "style" of Karate-Do. Thus, Toyama showed his students and the “karate world” that Takazawa was a favored and knowledgeable student. In 1955, Grandmaster Toyama gave Master Takazawa a dojo with the instruction that it be kept KEI SHIN KAN with the meaning:
KEI - In continually striving to improve of respect and humbleness (respectful and humble)
SHIN - One must develop the mind and soul (heart and soul, proper spirit; strong mind & body)
KAN - A place to develop those qualities through certified instructor training.
or
“We shall continually strive to improve a humble and respectful nature by developing the mind and soul through the art we practice in spirit and strength.”

Students are taught, in accordance to our name, to be humble and respectful to their fellow man through sincere, dedicated training. However, we study Karate as it has developed from the fighting methods studied in Okinawa.

Now in his later years, he has passed on to his two sons that which he had learned. Grandmaster Takazawa’s karate family has grown throughout the world and includes: Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Europe, and the United States. Most recently his students have successfully competed in the K-1 Oceanic competition while another student, Shin Koyamada, played a leading role opposite Tom Cruise in “The Last Samurai.”
