"Onishi O'Sensei truly expresses the spirit of the art that has been labled Koei-Kan.
He is the sole creator of this art to which many have dedicated themselves to study.
He is a great innovator, philosopher, historian, technician, pedagogue, and more important,
a great humanitarian. He comes from an exalted Samurai tradition as a descendant of the
Oshimiki Samurai clan, yet he is truly humble. He is not a false humility, but one that
is born of both physical and academic excellence.
Onishi O'Sensei received his introduction to karate from Shmabukuro Shigehiko, and later
became the leading disciple of famed Master Toyama Kanken and at one time was accepted for
instruction by renowned Okinawan Master Kyoda Juhatsu. Through Toyama O'Sensei and
Kyoda O'Sensei, Onishi Kancho became thoroughly schooled in both Shuri-Te and Naha-Te.
In 1957, Onishi Kancho furthered his knowlege by becoming a pupil of a Chinese Master
named Kyo Kochi and later studed and exchanged ideas with Chinese Master An Tenei.
Notable students of Onishi Kancho include Edward Kaloudis Sensei (Hachidan),
United States Director and International Representative of Koei-Kan; and Brian Frost
(Shichidan/Nanadan), Kokusai Shihan Menkyo. Shihan Frost served as Onishi Kancho's
apprentice as a Uchi Deshi (live in disciple) at the Master's home. Shihan Frost
serves as the Chief Tecnical Instructor and National Director for Koei-Kan in the United States.
Onishi Kancho is deserving of all the recognition and praise that he has so addiduously avoided."
