Mats Tverin
Founder of Ronin Do Karate and JuJutsu
Presentation of Ronin DO Karate & JuJutsu
The style Ronin Do is a young Martial Arts style founded spring 2004.
Disciplines trained in Ronin Do are Karate and Ju Jutsu focusing on selfdefence.
To get a greater understanding of the complexity of selfdefence the participant will study Anatomy,
Physiology, Neurology and soft tissue treatments on top of the regular training.
The main difference from other Karate and JuJutsu styles you will find in Ronin Do is the upright way
of moving when performing techniques. Focus when performing the techniques is on the individual’s safety.
You can also see the modern ways of performing attacks in a more “boxing” like appearance instead of the traditional
fixed ways of movement.
You will find kicking techniques similar to both Thai Boxing and Tae Kwon Do and grappling joint locks throws seen
in both traditional JuJutsu and in modern arts such as Brazilian JuJutsu and Shootfighting.
But one of the main differences is the focus of defending oneself against multiple attackers both armed and unarmed.
With the mind set on multiple attackers you will se a minimum of groundfighting techniques.
A few of the principles Ronin Do works after are:
• You can’t learn to defend yourself if you can’t do proper attacks.
• If you are prepared there will be no surprises.
Most of the techniques are adapted to modern ways of looking at Anatomy and Physiology, this means that techniques
are analysed so that no unnecessary bodily damage is caused when performing them.
For example: spine, knees and feet which otherwise is a common problem areas within Martial Arts.
Ronin Do uses the traditional way of grading with belts and Kuy/Dan grades, starting with white belt then yellow,
green, blue, brown and then black belt i.e.
During examination for the next level the student has to pass not only the technical part but also a part
on attitude and how he/she uses Kiai (breathing/screaming). There are also elements of fighting both with and
without grappling and multiple attackers during examinations for the higher grades.
The founder Mats Tverin has a background mainly from the French ecole Cocatre international de Bushido and
the Swedish style Castro Cocatre Self defence. Style Cocatre was founded by Master R. Cocatre, in this style
JuJutsu, Karate and Aikido was the main disciplines. Disciplines such as Kobudo piognarde aso where also part
of the training. In Style Castro Cocatre Self defence, Master E. Castro, a former private student of Cocatre,
went started his own style in 1995 after being responsible for technical development for style Cocatre and
turned focus to pure self defence.
M.Tverin has trained for Castro for over 20 years. He has also been training Muay Thai and Kickboxing and
Tae Kwon Do for several years and for a couple of year’s English boxing. When M. Tverin started his own style
he held following grades:
4 Dan Karate - Style Castro Cocatre
4 Dan Ju Jutsu - Style Castro Cocatre
1 Dan Aikido - Style Castro Cocatre
2 Dan Karate - Style Cocatre
2 Dan JuJutsu - Style Cocatre
1 Dan Aikido - Style Cocatre
Red Belt - Tae Kwon Do - WTF
The reasons for opening Ronin Do was a natural development sprung from the added knowledge of how our anatomy
is influenced when using different techniques. This created a difference in view on how to teach the techniques
and what is important during training regarding appearance and how to adapt to new research data in areas such
as nutrition and athletes physiology between Style Castro Cocatre and M. Tverin. So M. Tverin founded Ronin Do.
